So claim vandals, who graffitied every street sign along the road made famous by The Beatles, blanking out its name and scrawling the word "Racist" on a building.
According to the International Slavery Museum, located in Liverpool, England, there is debate about whether or not the name refers to slave trader James Penny, "but the evidence is not conclusive."
The city's mayor, Joe Anderson, says no, but tweeted that he is open to renaming anything in the city that has links to slavery.
