A Philadelphia man has accidentally killed himself in a botched ATM robbery, police say.
The unidentified 24-year-old, who police believe was part of a ring that targeted 30 ATMs early Tuesday morning, was apparently about to use an explosive device to break into the machine when it detonated. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police say.
Police commissioner Danielle Outlaw says detectives are working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate at least 30 similar incidents that occurred overnight in what appears to be a "coordinated" effort. It's unclear if any of the ATM break-ins were successful.
