CDC: Vodka does Not Kill the Coronavirus

Reps for Tito's Handmade Vodka, which is distilled in Austin, say using vodka for homemade hand sanitizer isn't effective against the coronavirus because it doesn't contain enough alcohol. "Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60 percent alcohol," the company tweeted Thursday. "Tito's Handmade Vodka is 40 percent alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC."

The tweet was in response to a number of online hand sanitizer recipes that have turned up online over the past few days, which suggest mixing vodka with aloe vera gel to keep hands virus-free. Although the mixture doesn't work, experts say using rubbing alcoholdoes-- as long as it's at least 60 percent pure.
