A high school class ring lost in Portland 47 years ago has been found -- buried under eight inches of soil in Finland.
The ring's owner, 63-year-old Maine resident Debra McKenna, says she has "no idea" how her missing piece of jewelry ended up so far away, but she's happy to have it back. "There was a lot of weeping when I learned that someone found it and made the effort to reach out and find me," she says.
The ring had been given to McKenna by future husband, Shawn, when they were attending high school in Brunswick, she says. Although she lost it in a public bathroom a few months later, she managed to hang onto Shawn, to whom she was married for 40 years. He died in 2017 after a six-year battle with cancer. "I feel very lucky," she says. "He was such a giving person, a deeply good person."
