I grew up in a hockey family. My family would sit around the TV and watch Colorado Avalanche games and cheer at each and every insane save Patrick Roy would make. He was like a god to me.
When I saw that HockeyNews magazine put out a special on the 100 greatest hockey goaltenders of all time, I snatched up a copy and excitedly opened to the list. Where was my man Roy going to land?
Turns out, he landed at #2. But he'll always be #1 to me.
Roy was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history in 2017, is considered one of the greatest goaltenders of all time, and won 4 Stanley Cups in his 19-year NHL career. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and is the only player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy three times - as well as the only one to do so in different decades and the only one to do so for two different teams.
There is no doubt that the scrappy Saint Patrick is among the best of the best.
