Fleetwood Mac Says Breakup With Lindsey Buckingham Is Final

60th Annual GRAMMY Awards - MusiCares Person Of The Year Honoring Fleetwood Mac - Show

Fleetwood Mac is not even entertaining the idea of a return by former guitarist/singer Lindsey Buckingham.

Buckingham was abruptly fired from the band in 2018 after Fleetwood Mac made history as the first collective to ever receive the MusiCares Person of the Year award.

After trying in vain to repair his frayed relationship with his band mates, Buckingham sued Fleetwood Mac for breach of contract and later settled out of court.

But Fleetwood Mac has a history of breaking up and then making up. Drummer Mick Fleetwood was recently asked by Rolling Stone if the band has reconsidered Buckingham's status now that some time has passed.

The drummer, who is busy organizing a tribute concert for band co-founder Peter Green, asserted that the band's dismissal of Buckingham was final, and the band is pleased with its new direction.

While he acknowledged that "Fleetwood Mac is a strange creature," he added, "We're very, very committed to Neil [Finn] and Mike [Campbell], and that passed away a time ago, when Lindsey left."

Fleetwood said that a reunion with Buckingham isn't not even "a point of conversation." He emphasized, however, that despite the way Buckingham's career with the band ended, "his legacy is alive and well, and as it should be."

"A major, major part that will never be taken away, and never be down-spoken by any of us. The situation was no secret. We were not happy. It was not working, and we parted company. And that really is the all of it."

Beyond his relationship with his band mates, namely Stevie Nicks (who reportedly initiated Buckingham's dismissal), the guitarist's health would also potentially be an obstacle to a Fleetwood Mac return.

Buckingham recently announced his first shows in over a year, coming up in May.

The guitarist suffered a heart attack in early 2019, and his vocal cords were reportedly damaged during efforts to save him. His wife questioned whether her husband would ever be able to sing again, but noted that the family was happy he survived the harrowing episode.

While Fleetwood Mac officially sent "thoughts and love" Buckingham's way after news of his heart attack broke, Fleetwood himself says he has not spoken to his former band mate since before the health scare.
