The United States Postal Service is warning people to be on the lookout for a scam involving bogus emails that claim to be from the post office.
In the latest Internet-based scam, people have been receiving official-looking emails with the subject line, "Delivery Failure Notification," according to USPS. "These emails appear to be from the U.S. Postal Service and include language regarding an unsuccessful attempt to deliver a package," a warning released Friday reads. "The email will prompt you to confirm your personal delivery information by clicking a button or downloading an attachment." However, doing so will activate a virus that will immediately start transferring information -- such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers and bank account details -- to the perpetrators, the post office indicates.
USPS officials are asking people who receive the bogus email to forward it to spam@usps.gov -- and then delete it.
